Get over yourselves.

The real revelation from the Worldwide Developer Conference 2008 is Mobile Me, it’s essentially the same thing Microsoft Exchange is, but finally an Apple version. For now they are just updating .mac accounts but I think this could go much much further.

So where is Snow Leopard and iChat for windows? (Ad wheres Mac Os X for PC so I can ditch my desire to replace my monster pc with an iMac).

First choose these options from the menu at the top of your screen:

1. System
2. Preferences
3. Keyboard

Now choose the “Layouts” tab from the top of the new window the click the “Layout Options…” button.

You will be presented with a nice list of option, near the bottom you should see  “Third Level Choosers”, click this and you should see your list grow.

Tick the option  “Press Left Alt key to choose 3rd level.” - Click “Close”.

This should have your hash key working.

You may also want to choose:

•  Miscellaneous compatability options - Numeric keypad keys work as with Mac.
• Alt/Win key behaviour - Left alt is swapped with left Win-Key (restores alt/cmd-tab window switching).

The svn+ssh:// server checklist

It can be quite tricky to get a bunch of users with existing SSH accounts to share a repository without permissions problems. If you’re confused about all the things that you (as an administrator) need to do on a Unix-like system, here’s a quick checklist that resummarizes some of things discussed in this section:

• All of your SSH users need to be able to read and write to the repository. Put all the SSH users into a single group. Make the repository wholly owned by that group, and set the group permissions to read/write.
• Your users need to use a sane umask when accessing the repository. Make sure that svnserve (/usr/local/bin/svnserve, or wherever it lives in $PATH) is actually a wrapper script which sets umask 002 and executes the real svnserve binary. Take similar measures when using svnlook and svnadmin. Either run them with a sane umask, or wrap them as described above.
• When BerkeleyDB creates new logfiles, they need to be owned by the group as well, so make sure you run chmod g+s on the repository’s db directory.

I discovered, through chance that wordpress MU was storing the categories within a users session then taking that session data and displaying it in the browser.

The reason, that the categories were not showing, was because we had almost no disc space on the partition that held sessions

(that r possibly akismet breaks them, but we turned that back on and they are still working).

The first is that Categories seem to be broken in both the Manage Category screen and on the blog, they don’t display and you get a 404 trying to access one. This partly affects Tags too.

Images don’t work for anyone with a custom domain name on there blog (effectively a new site), this returns an error message.

Sadly it looks like Wordpress MU is not yet, the answer to our problems in the multiblogging world, maybe WPMU 1.5 will be better?

It was many years ago and before I had an Internet connection that I was playing with Redhat, one of the early Linux distributions. I installed it from a PC Format cover disc. Once I had got through the installer I was presented with a command prompt that awaited instruction. I have to admit that I had no idea what to do - I did not really know that much about computers back then so had no experience to “guess” things or figure them out, none of my friends knew how to use Linux and I could not go online.

This was about 13 years ago, now things are much better, Mandrake (another Linux) took us a step forwards with an implementation that loaded a graphical interface by default, this interface was similar to Windows and made things much easier to work around.

Today, Ubuntu are almost certainly the leader in providing a version of Linux that is easy to use - Why? Because it is extremely easy to install and use, it comes with everything you will likely need as an average computer user, it’s pretty good looking and it supports loads of hardware.

I’ll be downloading Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron tomorrow along with many other people. I am hoping it will have improved support for my 8800GTX Graphics card.

You can view a list of new features on the Ubuntu website some of which are:

• Firefox 3
• Gnome 2.22 (The window manager)
• PolicyKit (allowing administrators better control over user permissions)
• Brasero (Better CD/DVD burning)
• Transmission (BitTorrent client, highly popular on the Mac)
• WorldClock App (It’s not a computer without a worldclock now is it!)
• Umenu (Install Ubuntu inside Windows as an application)

All is fine when you enter in the blogs domain name, you can browse it and it looks good until you try to login and you get a cookie error.

Compared to Wordpress’ documentation, the documentation for MU is pathetic. Most of it has not been written so I doubt even the function list is upto date.

Thankfully, there are lots of plugins out there, after a little hunting, im hacking peoples plugins into my own  and now have a latest posts function that returns everything as an array.
